Fall Tomatoes
Tomatoes in the Fall?
-You Betcha!
As more and more gardeners are discovering
each fall, with a little care, you too can have a late crop of garden
fresh tomatoes!
The secrets to growing tomatoes in the fall are really quite simple;
Grow early maturiting varieties.
Keep them steadily growing with
multiple applications of water soluble fertilizer formulated for
tomatoes.
Keep out the weeds. -they will
be out in force as the weather cools, and moisture becomes more
abundant. Don't let the weeds steal the precious sunlight
and nutrients!
As a precaution against Blossom-End
Rot, top dress a tablespoon of lime around the plant before flowering.
Try
growing them in containers. You can then move them to
a sheltered place in the event of a frost. Or, grow them
in containers on your patio, where the temperature is often a few
degrees warmer at night.
You may have to cover your plants
in the event of an early frost, (we sell bulk burlap for just that
purpose), But that seems like a minor inconvience for the true tomato
lover.

Better Boy
Rugged vines produce large crops of bright
red, 12-16 oz. Smooth flavorful fruit. More disease resistance than
the Big Boy tomato. Firm and perfect for slicing. One of the best
tasting, best producing garden tomatoes available anywhere. Indeterminate
75 days.

 |
Early Girl
Comes in first as an early slicing tomato.
Now more disease resistant than the original Early Girl, but bears
the same large harvests of flavorful, solid 4-6 oz fruit. Indeterminate
52 days. |
 |
Early Pick
Same old fashioned flavor and solid, juicy
fruit as Burpees Big Early Hybrid, but with disease resistance
and ability to set fruit in a wider range of temperatures, even low
night temperatures. Mild flavored, 8 oz. Fruit can grow to 1 lb. and
is bright scarlet through and through. Another great tomato from Burpee.
Indeterminate 62 days.

Jetsetter
Short Season gardeners especially will
be happy for this variety. It doesnt sacrifice size or flavor
for early maturity. Tomatoes are at least 8 oz. and often larger with
a good, rich flavor. Yields are plentiful on vigorous plants that
have lots of disease resistance, offering those in the South a great
early tomato. Indeterminate 64 days. |
 |
Yellow Pear
Miniature pear shaped tomatoes are 1
½ -2 long and a clear yellow color. Delightfully sweet
and considered by many as garden candy. Tall plants bear
large and continuous harvests. Indeterminate 78 days.
